Today Governor Wolf announced a major achievement for voting reform in Pennsylvania: more than one million Pennsylvanians have used his administration’s online voter registration website, register.votespa.com, in less than three years.

As the Clearfield Progress reports:

“The system, launched in August 2015 by Governor Wolf, has made it easier and more secure for citizens to register to vote and update their existing registrations. The 1 millionth user was from Delaware County.”

By submitting electronic applications, voters can rest assured that their personal information will be submitted directly to the appropriate office for processing. The system contains the most up-to-date data security and is constantly monitored and updated. Additionally, officials have found that the electronic applications improved accuracy, increased the integrity of the voting rolls, reduced time-consuming data entry and yielded considerable cost savings.

Governor Wolf is committed to protecting Pennsylvanians’ constitutional right to participate in free and fair elections. “I am proud of those in my administration who have helped more than a million people more easily participate in the process,” he said. “The success of online voter registration is a testament to citizens’ desire for an election system that is more secure, easier to navigate and better ensures their votes really count.”

Governor Wolf is dedicated to building on the progress already made towards increasing voter participation and ensuring the integrity of voting. He also called for automatic voter registration, same day voter registration, modernizing absentee ballots, and ending partisan gerrymandering. He also supports the Pennsylvania Department of State’s new directive requiring voting machines to have a voter-verifiable paper ballot or paper record of votes cast.

Governor Wolf Recognized as 1 of 10 Governors Shaping the Future of Politics

Governor Wolf is one of ten governors shaping the future of politics for his steadfast commitment to protecting fair elections and strengthening citizen power in Pennsylvania. In recognition of his leadership, The Hill recently wrote:

“The state Supreme Court last month ordered Republicans to draw new congressional district lines. When the GOP delivered its new proposal to Wolf’s office, he declined to sign off — throwing the maps back to the court, where Democrats believe they will secure a better deal.”

Governor Wolf has traveled the state speaking to Pennsylvanians about redistricting. “Over the last month, I have personally heard from thousands of Pennsylvanians and they are sick and tired of gerrymandering, which perpetuates gridlock, alienates citizens and stifles reform,” he said. He stood up for fairness and the will of the people of Pennsylvania by rejecting an equally gerrymandered map presented to him by Republican lawmakers.

As a result of Governor Wolf’s leadership, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court has released a remedial congressional map that will ensure fair and equal elections for all Pennsylvanians.

Former Attorney General and head of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee Eric Holder also praised the governor’s action. “Governor Wolf’s rejection of a map last week that would have continued Republican gerrymandering highlights how important it is that we elect more Democrats who will fight for fairness,” he said. “Republicans all over the country should be on notice — their days of partisan map-rigging are numbered.”

Now Governor Wolf’s attention is on working with the Department of State to support counties and candidates in the election process and ensuring that the 2018 Congressional elections run smoothly and fairly.

Governor Wolf Remains Committed to Investing in Our Kids’ Future

One of the hallmark commitments from Governor Wolf’s 2018-19 proposal was his call for increased funding for public education at all levels. Since Governor Wolf

One of the hallmark commitments from Governor Wolf’s 2018-19 proposal was his call for increased funding for public education at all levels. Since Governor Wolf took office, he has fully restored the $1 billion cuts to public education made in the previous administration that led to larger class sizes, teacher layoffs, and cuts to important programs like pre-k.

The Times Leader outlines the Governor’s record of investing in education:

“Wolf, a Democrat, campaigned in 2014 with promises to not only restore education cuts made under Gov. Tom Corbett, but to increase state money for public schools. Through it all, Wolf has managed to increase education spending, from about $12.8 billion in 2016-17 to $13.24 billion this fiscal year…”

The governor has also increased the number of children enrolled in pre-kindergarten by nearly 50 percent and enacted a fair funding formula to take the politics out of education funding.

Now Governor Wolf is ready to continue building on the progress from the past few years. He’s calling for an additional increase in education funding for basic education, early childhood development programs like Pre-K Counts and Head Start, Special Education, the State System of Higher Education, and Career and Technical Education.

For years Harrisburg politicians made education the first casualty of the budget. Governor Wolf has made it our first priority. “I have made it my mission to restore the cuts made to public education before I became governor and now we can further support our kids and our economy by making continued progress,” he said. “By driving more funding through our fair funding formula, we also further address the inequities in our local school funding system.”
